Sr. Software Engineer

Summary

Being naturally curious, I like to dig in and thoroughly understand the workings of the software I am working on. I especially like to solve recurring issues that cut into my teams or customers productivity. In the past this has meant producing quality documentation and automation for tool chains. It has meant creating frameworks that go beyond stated requirements when I know how to spend a little of my time to save my teammates and customers weeks and months later.

Two examples of this in a hardware diagnostics framework app are:

1. Went the extra mile to include hardware signal net lists into error reports so that technicians could immediately know each chip and pin number that an error signal is connected to.
2. On my own initiative, designed a facility that allows engineering technicians to create their own custom tests through a config file interface, saving me months of time over 15 years of the product life.

An example of precluding a large amount of work for my web app team was to design and implement a PHP framework that promotes rapid development. To assist in adoption and use, I provided about 30 web pages of demos and documentation on its features. This was completely my idea, and based on the custom needs and carefully-considered input from the eventual users.

I am described in a McQuaig Feedback Report as: very logical and analytical, precise, conscientious, cooperative, easy-going, steady, reliable, and a good team player. As mentioned in Steve McConnell's book, "Code Complete", I believe that humility is an important quality for a software developer.

Expectations

I enjoy producing a job well done, that delivers a needed solution to my employer and pride of workmanship to me -- company success, and team success, is my success.
A position in which I may continue to grow and to innovate is attractive to me, as are a healthy work environment and long-term employment.
I enjoy a collaborative environment that contributes to the growth of team members, and to the diminishment of tribal knowledge.
That said, I am most productive when I have uninterrupted blocks of time.
A company should provide clear expectations and feedback, appreciation, and career development support.
And it should honor it's values, just as I would align myself with the company's values and mission.
