Senior Communications Manager

Summary

I am a political scientist and strategic communications specialist with a background in journalism and political communications. As a journalist, I covered social and political developments, including violent conflict and the development of policies to promote peaceful stability and economic growth in low- and middle-income countries. As a specialist, I have managed several private and publicly funded communications campaigns. I have been responsible for all press relations, been the focal point for media enquiries, organised public events and engaged in outreach and networking for an NGO, a government department and a scientific advisory body. My various roles have allowed me to hone my analytical skills and develop holistic approaches to tackling sensitive issues and multifaceted challenges, e.g. working with open source intelligence and monitoring, developing effective messaging on sensitive policy issues and managing holistic communications campaigns and media strategies. I also coordinated audience-specific content and provided media advice to staff, experts and executives. The issues I worked on required careful, yet precise and sincere messaging. Logical argumentation was key to shaping opinion, informing and persuading policy-makers and the public about complicated and dynamic developments through all available channels, from face-to-face networking to large-scale, comprehensive communication campaigns. I have extensive project management experience in large and diverse institutions at international level and have worked in different regions of the world (e.g. Europe, NEA, Africa). I am fluent in German and English and have a good working knowledge of French and Arabic.

Expectations

Throughout my career, complex situations have required creative, effective and engaging work: As a reporter, I learned to obtain and verify hard-to-find information; in the newsroom, I was involved in questioning, evaluating and then presenting information in an accessible way. After working in public relations, I was able to hone my skills in sustainable agenda setting and building strong media relationships. Tailoring content for different media and audiences to build networks and disseminate key messages became my day-to-day business. As a spokesperson for an independent science policy advisory body, I presented science communication research findings to the media and the public in a meaningful and understandable way, significantly increasing reach and media engagement. While I have all the relevant skills, I am also adaptable to different team and work constellations. Moving jobs and places has taught me to be able to adapt, be flexible and open to new challenges. This experience has largely influenced what I expect from my new job. I believe in sustainability, equality and democracy, and I want to work in an environment where these values are respected. I still need to move around for family reasons, so I expect my future employer or client to look at how I work, not where I work. Also, I have always loved learning. So, I'm looking for a job that will help me develop in my career and as a person.
