DevOps Engineer

Summary

I am truly fascinated by the inevitable influence and impact of technology on our lives. I believe it is an area of endless potential and it inspires me to be involved in creating tangible solutions. Technology is prevalent in all aspects of our lives including FinTech, social media, online marketplace, Biotech and consumer data analytics. This is why I am pursuing a masters degree in software engineering, so that I can learn the required skills to be part of this exciting new trend.

My experience with Ebryx has a fine example of technical skills I acquired over the summer break of 2018. I was working, as an Intern at Ebryx, on the front-end of the company. I was assigned a project where I was required to make a web application using Angular.js. Since this was my first time working with Angular.js; therefore, I had to start off by learning the basics of Angular.js and then utilise those skills for the undertaken task. I revised JavaScript, HTML, CSS and learnt to work on Linux, Node.Js, Express and MongoDB, which were entirely new to me at that time. It took me some time to become familiar with them but at the end, I worked with MEAN stack to finish my project on time.

Similarly, I worked as a software developer in IBM Hyper Protect Containers team where I had the chance of owning and delivering numerous user stories, ranging from fixing bugs to coming up with innovative solutions to deliver challenging tasks. I collaborated and liaised with several stakeholders and learnt to observe and practice agile methodologies, CI/CD in DevOps pipeline, Test Driven Development (TDD), unit testing and various other technologies including Jenkins, Travis, Kubernetes Docker etc. During my placement, I worked with multinational teams based in the US, China and India.

The evidence of my success at IBM is the exceptional feedback received as part of my final year performance review. I achieved a rating of 5 (out of 5) in three categories, a 4 in the remaining two categories from my task manager. This is summarised by the following feedback from my manager: Fahd's done really well in the squad - picked up lots of new skills/expertise, not just from a technical standpoint but also from Agile ways of working, presenting and interpersonal skills. I have received nine pieces of ACE feedback in relation to my contributions made in a wide variety of initiatives. The feedback is related to my role at IBM as a software developer, IBM Academic Ambassador, Presenter at The Glasgow University Hackathon and organisation wide Playbacks.
To further broaden my horizons in the field of technology, I worked and received seven badges, some notable ones are: IBM Recognized Speaker/Presenter and IBM Agile Explorer. On a number of occasions, I delivered presentations including:
- IBM TechConnect Fair 2019: Discussed IBM Hyper Protect Virtual Servers (HPVS) in depth.
- The Glasgow University Hackathon
- Organisation wide Playbacks and Tech Talks
- Skills Workshop at The University of Glasgow
- Presenter Academy
I worked diligently and resiliently throughout the placement as I was able to quantify the impact I was having in my business area and the people I worked with. The high number of stories/projects and complex tasks I was assigned and successfully delivered is a testament of my value-add. I achieved a rating of 5 in the Responsibility to Others category, which supports the fact that I was considered a reliable, trustworthy team member. An excerpt from my managers feedback states: Fahd is a well liked, valuable member of my squad, who's always looking to contribute towards our common goals.
My impact has been broader than the immediate team. I bridged the communication between IBM and The University of Glasgow. This was particularly key as the European University Programs Leader mentioned We had lost the momentum at this university... Another example is when I gave a talk to Seaford college students about my internship experience at IBM. Further, I collaborated with a few IBMers to draft a patent. Currently, I am working as a Tutor and run tutorial workshops for first- and second-year students at the University of Glasgow, while marking their coursework.

Overall, I feel that these skills and achievements would give me an advantage to successfully complete my role. I am a proactive individual with a willingness to learn and have a flexible approach to meet new challenges and demands. I would be grateful if you consider my application and provide me with the opportunity to attain my potential.

NOTE:

Some notable achievements from my university include:
Delivered presentations at Barclays insight week, KPMGs insight day and Sainsbury's Challenge
by Creative Data Laboratory.
I ran for Vice President-Education in the Students' Representative Council (GUSRC) and received
506 votes.
Member and Secretary of the Glasgow University Cricket Club (GUCC).
Attended the Learning Enhancement and Academic Development Service (LEADS) 11th Annual
Learning & Teaching Conference .
Participated in several hackathons including: Do you have guts?
Presented the Highly Innovative Teaching award in the Student Teaching Award Ceremony
(STA's).
Assisted the school management in interviewing and recruiting the new teachers for our
department.
Received Undergraduate Excellence scholarship award worth £25000 pounds.

Expectations

I am determined to work with a company which combines various qualities that I am looking for in my professional career: an ability to use my technical and analytical skills learnt throughout my placements and university experience; the opportunity to practice dataflow and work closely with clients; to become part of the cloud platform and model the relationships among people, processes and technology by automating the dataflow and DevOps methodology.
