About the Role

Our Client is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to lead end-to-end payroll operations across our U.S. and Australia workforce of 1,500+ employees. You will own the accuracy and compliance of payroll including equity transactions, SOX controls, and multi-state tax obligations while driving automation initiatives and serving as the companys subject matter expert on payroll accounting, tax, and regulatory requirements.

This role requires close collaboration with Finance, HR, Legal, and third-party agencies to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant payroll delivery at scale.

Key Responsibilities
Payroll Operations
o Process end-to-end multi-state payrolls for 1,500+ employees using Workday Payroll
o Manage employee equity transactions and related tax withholding
o Partner with HRIS/IT on Workday updates, testing, and enhancements
o Resolve payroll discrepancies and serve as the primary escalation point
Payroll Accounting
o Prepare and review payroll journal entries, reconciliations, and GL postings
o Collaborate with Accounting on payroll expenses, accruals, and liabilities
o Support month-end and year-end close, including W-2 processing
Payroll Tax & Compliance
o Ensure accurate calculation, withholding, and reporting of payroll taxes
o Manage W-2, W-2c, and other year-end filings
o Maintain SOX compliance and respond to agency notices/audits
o Conduct audits of payroll data changes for compliance
Time, Attendance & Employee Data
o Oversee time/attendance workflows and ensure compliance with wage laws
o Partner with Legal/HR on garnishments, levies, and mandated deductions
o Monitor regulatory changes impacting payroll operations
Technology, Automation & AI
o Identify opportunities to streamline and automate payroll processes
o Lead payroll technology projects (integrations, upgrades, redesigns)
o Leverage AI tools (Claude, Gemini, etc.) for reporting, reconciliation, and workflow efficiency

Qualifications
8+ years of end-to-end payroll and equity transaction experience
Hands-on expertise with Workday Payroll
Strong knowledge of payroll accounting, SOX controls, and GL reconciliation
In-depth understanding of federal and multi-state payroll tax compliance
Proven year-end close experience (W-2/W-2c processing in Workday & ADP SmartCompliance)
High proficiency in Excel and Google Sheets
Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and meet tight deadlines
Strong attention to detail, discretion with confidential material, and excellent communication skills

Additional Information
Time Off: No extended time off approved through March 2027 (no coverage available)
Hybrid Schedule: In-office Mon, Tues, Thurs; Remote Wed, Fri until September (date TBD). Transitioning to full remote thereafter.

Salary : $74/ per hour
