Should you tell recruiters that you were laid off?

How upfront should I be about being laid off to recruiters?

I would surely tell, why not? Also, if that was a layoff and left on good terms, you could provide references i.e. your EM or HR (if you had good performance ratings).

yeah providing references should help, if a potential employer has any doubts, they could call and check

I would definitely tell but only if / when they ask why I'm looking for a new job. Being laid off isn't being fired, and recruiters usually understand that many talented devs got laid off these days. For example, my teammate, a principal SDE with 20 years in the company, just got laid off. So I would not worry about sharing that.

yup, nothing to be ashamed of or hide. Better focus on presenting the achievements and impact that you had done.
